This site
This site runs WordPress “blog” software, which is written in PHP, on the Apache web server with a MySQL database back-end. This combination allows just a huge amount of flexibility, and it all runs on UNIX-type operating systems such as FreeBSD, Mac OS X and Linux — a set of technologies that I enjoy tinkering with. All of these applications are open-source (except OS X, but this site is not on an OS X box at this time).
WordPress is fully customizable, and many people have created WordPress “themes,” which feature all kinds of graphics, design philosophies and display elements. I use elements from several different themes which are available under open source licenses.
In addition to hacking up the theme files, I’ve implemented some Apache re-write rules to customize the URLs as I see fit, and redirect some older URLs to the current pages.
