I have this love/hate thing with cranes. Or maybe it’s more of a fascination/fear thing. I think it’s so amazing to have these gigantic trusses up there in the sky moving things around, but every time I walk past one — and they are all over San Francisco — I can’t help thinking it might fall over.
Irrational fear, right? Just because the guy I worked with at the computer store when I was in high school was hawking hard drives because the crane he operated fell over while he was in the cab and he couldn’t move his back anymore. Or because the crane working on a mall near where I grew up fell on to the freeway. Or because every time there’s a news item around a crane, it’s because it’s falling over!
But aside from the “rampant” falling over — yes, I know most cranes don’t get any attention since they stay up — cranes are really fascinating. Kinda like roller coasters… scary but generally very safe… except every time there’s a news article about a roller coaster it’s because someone fell off it…
Yikes, I give up!
Anyway, here are a couple of the crane pics I’ve taken recently around town.
